Tulip Time is More Than Tulips

Each spring, Pella prepares to welcome thousands of visitors for Tulip Time, a celebration known far and wide for its vibrant blooms. And yes, we all love the tulips. They are a beautiful symbol of our Dutch heritage and a colorful reminder of the season.

But as every longtime Pella resident knows… Tulip Time is so much more than tulips.

Because while flowers may come and go with the unpredictability of Iowa weather, the heart of Tulip Time - the music, the dancing, the food, the history, and the people - shows up in full color every single year.

Step Into a Living Dutch Village

At the center of it all is the Historical Village and Vermeer Windmill, where visitors can step into Pella’s story in a way that goes far beyond what you can see in a flower bed. Here, you can:

  • Tour the working Vermeer Windmill
  • Explore more than a dozen historic buildings
  • Visit the Wyatt Earp Boyhood Home
  • Watch live craft demonstrations like wooden shoe carving, quilting, rope making, and Dutch letter baking

It’s a place where history isn’t behind glass; it’s alive, moving, and meant to be experienced.

Music, Dancing, and the Spirit of the Netherlands

Throughout Tulip Time, the streets of Pella come alive with performances that celebrate Dutch culture and community. You’ll find:

  • The Afternoon Grandstand Show, featuring Dutch dancing, singing, and the presentation of the Tulip Queen and her Court
  • Free evening Feesthouden performances, filled with music and energy
  • Pop-up performances from groups like the Dutchesses, Dutch Family Singers, and Tiny Tulips

Everywhere you turn, there’s something to hear, something to watch, and something to make you smile.

A Festival You Can Taste

Tulip Time is just as much about flavor as it is about festivity. Across the festival, you’ll find dozens of food stands offering everything from classic fair favorites to authentic Dutch treats like poffertjes, Dutch letters, and Pella bologna. You can also:

  • Enjoy a full Dutch dinner experience
  • Sip tea and learn history at Maria’s Tea Room
  • Grab a snack and stroll the square, soaking in the atmosphere

Because sometimes the best way to experience history is to taste it!

Shop, Explore, and Discover

Beyond performances and food, Tulip Time is filled with opportunities to explore and connect:

  • Browse over 100 vendors at the Dutch Craft Market
  • Take a narrated wagon tour through Pella and learn the stories behind the sights
  • Visit floral exhibits, art installations, and interactive displays throughout town

Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, there’s always something new to discover.

It’s About the People

Perhaps the most remarkable part of Tulip Time isn’t something you’ll find on a schedule. It’s the people. It’s the thousands of residents who don traditional Dutch attire. The volunteers who greet you with a smile. The performers who have practiced for months. The families who return year after year, building traditions of their own. For three days each spring, Pella becomes something truly special - a place where history, hospitality, and community come together in a way that simply can’t be replicated

Come for the Tulips - Stay for Everything Else

We always hope the tulips are in full bloom. We plant for it, plan for it, and watch the weather closely. But even if the blooms fade a little early, Tulip Time never loses its color. Because the real beauty of this festival isn’t just in the gardens. It’s in the experiences, the traditions, and the stories shared along the way. So come anyway.

Come for the music.
Come for the food.
Come for the history.
Come for the joy of being part of something bigger than a single season.

Tulip Time is waiting - tulips or not!
